The latest on the Star Wars Kid says that there are lawyers involved now, and they’re not happy with whoever originally put the video on the web. (It doesn’t look like they’re mad at the people who propagated it.) What really sucks is Ghyslain might not accept the money (man, monthly archive permalinks suck) presumably because they think (after lawyer fees) they may get more out of whoever they’re taking action against. A disappointing ending to what has been a pretty fairytale-like story so far. Andy just informed me that they will accept the gifts, which I think is a great thing. Obviously something about the movie or the situation inspired a lot of people to donate, many probably because they related to the situation. Hopefully things will turn out alright after all.
Yeah. It sux. Greedy parents and lawyers suck. Why are people so mean and where did their sense of humor go? When and how did we get so easily offended?
I’m guessing it was the parents too and not the kid, as he seemed pretty nice and easygoing. Pure speculation though.
i’m obviously late to this whole thing. 🙁 but now i know what the hoopla is all about.
So not cool. I don’t see how he can accept the money and the gifts and still sue for damages. And if he’s mad at the people who put the video on the internet, why isn’t he mad at the people who promoted it on their websites and exposed the Star Wars Kid to millions of web users, leading to all sorts of media coverage?
Maybe he is mad at them too, but they aren’t as liable. Maybe he was mad, but now that he’s getting a 30gb iPod he’s alright. (Hey, I’ll dance, rap, sing, flail, whatever if I got an iPod out of it!) Also the people who put it up originally probably did it with malicious intent, where Andy (where the meme blossomed from) and all the others were just passing around a video of some anonymous kid.
