If you use Google Sync to sync your iPhone contacts with your Gmail contacts (works with Google Apps too), then it brings your GMail contacts into the iPhone. Phone numbers, emails, addresses, photos, everything. And it keeps them in sync too, using a push method. Also syncs the calendar entries from your Google Calendar.

Okay, I just finished posting what ended up being a four-part series (so far). Filling Mac Address Book Pictures with Gravatars, offers a complete script to update your Mac Address Book contacts with Gravatars. Everything is GPL so I hope I've built a set of scripts and tutorials that will help others do useful and creative things with Gravatars. I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions. Thanks.

I have some AppleScript code that I've been using to update my Mac Address Book pictures with Gravatars. Those then sync to the iPhone, of course. Your post prompted me to clean up the code, document the process, and make it available for everyone to use. I just posted the first part as Gravatar, AppleScript, and Address Book Pictures, with the rest to follow soon.

Why would anyone would want Gravatars on Gmail, or on anything else, really? I am not trolling, but what is a Gravatar? From a real photo to a random something, it can represent anything. Why would I want to have, lets say, the picture of a shoe associated with John Doe?

The Gravatar Importer for Google Contacts imports Gravatars and syncs them with Google contacts using Gravatars so you see Gravatars in your Gmail account. I've been using this since October 2008 and love seeing faces in my Gmail.

I agree. The number of times I’ve been using a website or service on my iPhone and thought “wish this had gravatar support”… man its not even funny. It’s cool to know there are other likeminded peeps out there though

gravatar in twitter will also make sense, especially for early adapters as in Gmail. One less config / setting to care

That’s a neat little hack. Not quite enough to make me switch back to Firefox for GMail (instead of Chrome), but it’s a positive sign of things hopefully to come in a more cross-platform, cross-browser fashion.

Do you think Gmail would do that? they always wanted to run light weight threads to make all their sites to load faster. Probably gravatar integration is going to slow it down and my bet is that google wouldn’t want to do it
