Hmm…2.7 clearly shines! Check out the permalink for this post — it 404s, presumably because it’s getting the day and slug confused! (Use this link to access this post.)

I’d change your post slug if I were you. :)

    “Improvise”

If the tagline for WP 2.7 “Coltrane” is “Improvise”, then I would to give a big applause to WP and its contributors for this superb performance.

You are giving any WP user the ability to take blogging to a new and extremely personlized level with endless possibilities. That is music to anyone’s ears.

    “Encore!!! Encore!!!”

  • Sakib December 11, 2008 @ 2:55 am

Matt, I couldn’t able to watch this HD version – do you please give any alternative links of the same video.

Oh, thanks for the great jobs and it’s now more faster the ever.

  • Per December 11, 2008 @ 3:01 am

    Brilliant!

First Coltrane website will be up in 3 mins.

    Regards from a snowy Switzerland
(when I look outside the window I see the exact same kind of snow as on your website, it freaks me out really….)

  • Magento eCommerce December 11, 2008 @ 3:27 am

WOW! This is a huge leap forward, I can’t wait to begin rolling this out for our clients, they are going to be blown away!

    Great Work

  • Heiko [HVBX] December 11, 2008 @ 3:32 am

    another question:
Can you tell me which sotware was used to create the screen recordings and make the editing?

  • Kjetil December 11, 2008 @ 3:47 am

Congratulations on the release! It really looks great!

  • Hyder December 11, 2008 @ 4:11 am

  • mkjones December 11, 2008 @ 5:15 am

Waiiiit, its not Xmas for another 3 weeks?!

  • Nick December 11, 2008 @ 6:43 am

    AWESOME.

With WordPress 2.7 out the door, does that mean more effort will be directed toward bbPress now (pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease)?

  • Universal Indie Records December 11, 2008 @ 6:52 am

I LOVE IT! When you first started showing the improved admin. I hated it. I didn’t download any of the betas or any of that until I upgraded the actual release on one of my sites today.

Wow.. was I ever wrong about this release. It’s so damn easy and will look a lot better as a cms when building sites for client.

  • Gabriel McGovern December 11, 2008 @ 7:20 am

Very nice! Love the “quick edit” feature.
Also good to see it snowing on your site again this year.

  • Brent Trahan December 11, 2008 @ 7:29 am

    Love it Matt! THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Li Zhen December 11, 2008 @ 7:38 am

    Cheers to WP.

btw, like th snows. Beautiful :)

  • John December 11, 2008 @ 8:08 am

    Nice. Well done.

  • Universal Indie Records December 11, 2008 @ 8:39 am

I’ve upgraded 5 of my sites this morning…
I’m loving it. THe only issue I had was with the “Platinum SEO Pack” plugin. My pages would come up blank when this was installed. I went back to the “All in One SEO Pack” plugin with no problem.. so I guess i’ll switch all my sites to this.

  • Sam December 11, 2008 @ 9:30 am

    Hey Matt,

I’d just like to thank you for the improvements made since the earlier versions… It really has made my blogging experience an even better one.

    Many Thanks

    Sam

  • Kristan December 11, 2008 @ 10:35 am

I couldn’t find a place to put this on the WordPress site, so I just thought I’d tell you and ask that you pass along to your team:

    FANTASTIC JOB!!!

This is everything I want in a CMS and more. It’s wonderful. I would say perfect, if I thought anything could be perfect. This may be the closest thing I’ve seen yet, though!

  • Jacroe December 11, 2008 @ 11:33 am

Any idea when the hello dolly plugin will be updated to fit with 2.7?

    • Matt December 11, 2008 @ 1:35 pm

      It already has been.

  • Brian December 11, 2008 @ 12:17 pm

    Hey Matt,

I’m totally astounded by the new 2.7 release. I’ve uninstalled many plugins that have been made superfluous by the vastly improved interface, and I can’t wait until 2.8 so that I have an excuse to use the new auto updater!

As much as I love the new release I love the video you’ve embedded above even more. It really got me excited for the new version, and it’s a very polished and clever little instructional video. I have an education in technical writing so I have a keen eye for exceptional technical communications, and this is definitely a prime example.

  • Wagner Reis December 11, 2008 @ 1:15 pm

They need more focus in the BBPRESS!

  • MaXsiM December 11, 2008 @ 1:30 pm

All i can say is thank you for 2.7!

It’s truly the best WordPress of all times – Coltrane really would love it ;)

  • Tony December 11, 2008 @ 1:54 pm

yeah i just want to say thanks to everyone who works on making this system better. I knew very little about code or internet technology until i stumbled on WordPress last year. Its taught me ton about php and css. Its now an awesome cms system/blog for my band. http://www.stemsounds.com. And 2.7 is an amazing interface that just makes this so much easier for me. Being in a band is tough so anything i can do to save time is a god send. and this not only allows me to save time, but its just so much fun to click around this thing. Amazing UI work, a lot of paid web services can learn a lot from you guys.

  • Nick December 11, 2008 @ 2:18 pm

    Simply amazing. Thanks Matt!

  • Network Geek December 11, 2008 @ 3:19 pm

Wow, I have to admit, the new interface is really good. I liked the old interface and really didn’t see the need for improvement, but, wow, the actual end result is way better than I was expecting and better than the screenshots I saw of the interface earlier on. Well done! And, thanks for all the work that you and the other developers put into this project.

  • Danny Mekic' December 11, 2008 @ 4:53 pm

    It’s really beautiful!

  • Tim Weston December 11, 2008 @ 8:24 pm

    Matt,
Thanks very much to everyone involved in this release. The UI is truly awesome and includes some great features that allow me to stop using some plugins I’ve added in the past few years.

    Keep up the great work!

  • elissa December 11, 2008 @ 8:31 pm

    gorgeous :D

  • ayel December 12, 2008 @ 2:54 am

I’ve experienced 2.7 because I have a WordPress.com account. But I have trouble upgrading my self-hosted wp’s. The WPAU plugin didn’t work well last time and I don’t want it tohappen again. I just wish there’s a better and simpler way to upgrade to newer wp vesions.

More power to the WP community! Merry Christmas to one and all!

  • Stefan December 12, 2008 @ 5:58 am

Updating to WP 2.7 didn’t work for me. Maybe it’s because I mixed up the two official German WP versions in then past.

I published a zeitgeisty movie poster on my blog: “WordPress 2.7: The Day Alter Falter! stood still” ´- check it out! :-)

  • Janet December 12, 2008 @ 7:15 am

Matt, the new release is looking great so far. I do have one BIG disappointment, however. I was hoping for more bulk management tools for categories. We need to be able to highlight all the posts in one category, and move them in bulk to another existing (or create new) category. This would make clean-up and re-filing SO much less time-consuming. Please? I can’t imagine the amount of time and effort you must put into this project, and I for one really appreciate the commitment you’ve made. Thank you, a million times over, for WordPress.

  • Joey Faulk December 12, 2008 @ 11:50 am

Improvise is music to my ears! Thanks to all who have contributed! I am looking forward to learning more and more!

  • Randy December 12, 2008 @ 8:41 pm

Awesome. Going to install it now. I look forward to learning and using it!

Thanks for all your hard work!

  • Nathan C December 13, 2008 @ 11:09 am

I have to admit, this is the best WordPress edition ever!

  • Tony December 13, 2008 @ 8:42 pm

You guys are kicking butt! Keep it up!

  • Smashcut December 13, 2008 @ 9:51 pm

@Heiko [HVBX] – the video was made with a combination of Screenflow, Final Cut Pro, After Effects CS4, Ableton Live and a whole lot of French blend coffee :)

  • Matías December 14, 2008 @ 2:42 pm

“Coltrane” really makes WordPress shine; that you have managed to make a portion of the web feel like home is a big success.

  • simbel December 14, 2008 @ 6:11 pm

It truly is amazing! Even though after the update I was mildly shocked about how much the UI had changed (yeah, haven’t been paying attention to news or anything), I really like it now that I’ve played around with it a little. Very intuitive AND good looking! Not to mention it’s inspired by jazz, mmmmm. The vid is nice, too. Thanks so much for the amazing job!

One thing that would make this even more awesome would be the option to put the sidebar menu of the dashboard on the right side of the screen – maybe it’s just left-handed me but sidebars on that side always made more sense to me.

Maybe if enough people request that you’ll consider it for some of your future releases (:

  • v.narayanan December 15, 2008 @ 6:11 am

  • David December 15, 2008 @ 10:34 am

Wow!!!! Thanks Matt for another HOME run. When I thought WordPress could not get better you outdid yourself. So many thanks.

  • George R. December 15, 2008 @ 11:05 am

Matt. Great video! I’m excited to take a look at what it can do very soon.

What flash player are you using for your video? And where are you hosting the video? I do a lot of video and really like the clean player that you are using. Shoot me an email if you have a moment. Thanks!

    • Matt December 15, 2008 @ 9:58 pm

      It’s the WordPress.com player.

  • fukuchan December 17, 2008 @ 8:24 pm

    i love wp.2.7
    i?’s cool !

  • Spike December 20, 2008 @ 3:36 pm

Have always loved WordPress. Thanks for sharing. 2.7 is brilliantly done. It is really great how it keeps improving. I’d love to be more involved with your product. Nice job.

  • Arun Pattnaik December 22, 2008 @ 12:20 am

2.7 is supercool! The level of improvement makes me worry whether wordpress would be free for long ;-) . I Love WP anyways :-)

  • Hemanth December 22, 2008 @ 4:36 am

Beautiful work matt and team. Upgraded all my blogs. Cheers!
    Hemanth

  • ascension December 23, 2008 @ 3:57 pm

    Wp is always used.
It may be easy for you to use it.
    I love WordPress2.7.

  • DavidN December 24, 2008 @ 5:43 pm

Matt, can you get WP Folks caption the video?

    • Matt December 25, 2008 @ 10:02 pm

Yeah we’re looking into ways of doing captions in the future.

  • Elizabeth Kaylene December 26, 2008 @ 7:32 pm

I use WP for all of my sites and I love it. I’m not too crazy about this, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. (:

A couple of people said above that the sidebar should be allowed to be moved to the right, and I completely agree. Or could we also move it back to the horizontal position? I have a thing for right hand sidebars or horizontal menus for some reason. I’m not even left handed.

All the complaining aside, thanks so much for all you do. I love WP, I love bbPress, and I love the team for giving us so much for virtually nothing in return. You guys are my heroes!

  • DavidN December 28, 2008 @ 2:34 pm

Matt, want to thank you for replying (re: caption). Please try put a little pressure with your company — believe it or not, many of us (I’m deaf) have our own wordpress — and there are two webhost companies — I use one of them and we keep each other posted on little cool things we discovered in WordPress. One of the webhost owner even made a vlog (video blog) giving info how to setup WordPress.

Also, many hard of hearing are having problem hearing audio coming from computer.

  • Jason January 5, 2009 @ 12:47 pm

Great job! WP 2.7 is terrific. You guys keep raising the bar.

The new interface blew my mind for a bit (it’s so different than 2.6!) but I’ve been getting used to it. I’ve been looking forward to it since WordCamp and it’s even more clean and powerful than I expected.

And the fact that it’s something you give away for free is incredible.

Can’t wait till I have time to upgrade my personal site (upgraded at work right away)…. :)

  • ?? January 31, 2009 @ 2:54 am

    i love WordPress.

  • Sascha June 20, 2009 @ 3:10 am

Is there a video available for WP 2.8 and further developments too?
I watched that 2.7 video in the beginning of this year and was quite excited – so is there any sequel of it?

    Kind regards,
    Sascha
