Moving Up

I was just lying in bed, soaking in the music and resting my eyes. There was a killer soprano player on, and as I walked to my desk to get something, I said that had to be Coltrane. The band was heavy with energy, the harmony was thick, a synergy/focus was there that you only hear from the very best jazz groups. As the drummer, who I could’ve sworn was Elvin kicked the melody back, I saw the artist on my Winamp playlist: Joshua Redman. Usually in instances like that I am inwardly embarrassed at my misidentification, but for some reason I felt proud of Joshua. Good for him. Spirit of the Moment: Live at the Village Vanguard is the name of the CD; it has Peter Martin on it, who I had the pleasure of meeting a year or so ago by the kitchen in a crowded and smokey New Orleans jazz club. Snug Harbor I think.

Speaking of jazz, and continuing today’s pattern of double entries, I’ll be seeing David Caceres, my teacher and first client, tonight at the Red Cat. He’s playing with Sebastian Whittaker and it looks to be a great show; I just wish I didn’t have a headache.

  1. Thank you! Actually that post made me really want trackback so I could ping your headache post and we could chronicle something weird in Houston air giving everyone migraines. Yesterday was actually my second migraine, the first was the same day as yours. What makes it even weirder is that I haven’t had a headache in months!

  2. Hello! Been catching up on the jazz world on AAJ, a website devoted to jazz, allaboutjazz.com. Fun site which is just recovering from a hack job that wiped out a lot of the interesting information and posts in their forums, on their bulletin boards by its interesting members. This is a kinid of laid back site, that is easy to navigate, and fun to be on. Lots of info there like what is , jazz history, current releases, and so forth, also, which players are the best, which browsers, you get my drift. World wide membership, with some interesting and provocative posts.

  3. Great Matt, long time getting back to this site! I have been entering new things from our shop online, and a few antiques, more to come later, Visit me at Trocadero.com, seller ID 22ndstreet. Bikini’s, Fleeces, etc, plus lots of crystal, glass, and Pottery, dinner services. Then I am off to warmer climes, once I sell this large accumulation of things. I’ll be gone, out of here! Costa Rica, here we come!!!!

  4. Found a great web site for Drummers. I think it is “drummers.com” It has some great bio’s, photo’s and discographies, along with songs to play. This is a fun site for jazz lovers and lovers of swing as well. Just the best. Easy to navigate and fun to see the great photo’s, and listen to the best music. Haven’t heard such diverse music since I lived in Hermosa Beach and used to go to the Lighthouse all of the time, and to a few other clubs in the area. How great it was to see all of the Jazz greats in such a small intimate setting as the Lighthouse, Cyrano’s, and the places up at Malibu and Laguna Beach. Great times, great fun, miss it terribly.

  5. Made a mistake on my previous post. It is drummerworld.com. This is a good site, sorry about not having it down right the first time.

  6. So you’re in Texas, home of most of my relatives.

Sam Houston, according to my cousin was great friends of my Great Grandfather, John Harvey Vermillion. Joseph Vermillion was one of a handful of men to stumble upon Santa Anna after the Alamo and the other battle, (wasn’t it Golidad?) and capture him and take him back to their commanding officers. Interesting history, interesting times. I would love to have a picture of him, all we have is a picture of John Harvey Vermillion and his bride on their wedding day, Nancy Jane Smith. This picture was sent to me by a long lost relative I found on the internet, or I should say, he found me through Roots. Great to have that picture. It is so interesting to see relatives I could only guess at how their appearance might be. To finally have a picture of them is just fascinating. I have a niece with blond hair, blue gray eyes with golden skin, and I have wondered all her life who in our family or on her fathers side of the family she looks like, and now I know! She has Nancy Janes features, so much so as to be amazing, however Nancy Jane had black hair and dark eyes, but my great grandfather had blues eyes, and more of my nieces coloring. Just thought I would share this with you.

I have been trying to find an old friend from my beach days, in Hermosa Beach. She was from Playa del Rey in Southern California also. She used to have a really hot Corvette, which Bob Bondurant raced for her. She had trophy’s from those races. We used to have a great time in that car. She married and moved to Houston years and years ago, her husband Bill Williams worked for Shell Oil as a math programer back in the earliest days of computers. She had a son by the name of Doug, and another named Brad I believe. Her name is Loretta, but she goes by Laurie. Her maiden name was Johnston. Laurie Johnston Williams. If you should know of her or her kids, get in touch. You can find me on allaboutjazz.com. A great site for music if you’re into jazz, or politics, we have a bit of everything going on over there. Her kids are in their 40’s now, god, how time does fly!
