iPod Won’t Mount

Weird problem: my iPod shows that it’s charging and it shows up as connected (with full info) in the System Profiler but it doesn’t mount, it doesn’t show up on the desktop or in iTunes. I’ve tried two Firewire cables and a USB cable, so I’m sure it’s not that. If I had to guess I’d say it started after the 10.3.5 update, but I’m not really sure.

  1. This is SO frustrating. Both the iPod and the laptop whirr when I plug it in. I tried a soft reset (hold select and menu) to no avail.

  2. You might want to make sure you’ve got the latest firmware installed on your iPod. I had a similar problem connecting my iPod to my Linux box a while back but loading the latest firmware took care of it for me.

  3. If it makes you feel any better, i got my ipod and laptop a couple of weeks after you did, and had to have the ipod replaced already. dead screen. πŸ™ fortunately the apple store was very helpful about it

  4. I noticed it was broken right after I got the new updater software. On the updater the update button was disabled and it said the iPod was attached but not mounted on the desktop, so all it could do was a restore.

  5. I’ve run into this. Turning my computer “off” and back “on” seems to solve it. A simple restart doesn’t do it. Weird.

  6. fwiw – same thing happened here, except Mac couldn’t see the iPod at all, under any circumstances– but it got a charge. thought it was OS X screwing up somehow? I ended up having the Apple Store do a restore on the iPod (though it was working perfectly, fwiw) and shutting the Mac down and back up in the meantime. brought the iPod home, plugged it in… nothing. now the strange part: I left it there and the next morning the iPod was sitting there in iTunes. and it’s worked since. this makes no sense on so many levels, I know, but those are the facts. oddddd.

  7. I recently updated my iPod, which had worked almost flawlessly. After the update, I went to camp. I returned on saturday, and tried to sync my iPod on sunday. No luck, just shows the battery charging. Now, I tried not to panic, I checked the cables, ect. Nothing, still just the battery charging. I had heard that with some iPods after the 004-04-28 (v2.2) Update, would no longer work. Afraid mine might be one of them, I franticly began searching the web for advice. One site said it may be a firewire problem, and to 1.Unplug firewire devices. 2.Power off the computer, unplug the power, and wait 5min. 4. Plug the power in, power it up, and reattatch your iPod. That didnt work for me. Next I tried an apple firewire test, to check and see if my iPod had a problem with it’s firewire port. (Toggle the Hold switch, hold Menu and Pause/Play for 10 seconds, and then at the apple logo, hold Next, Previous, and Select for 10 seconds and let go. A reverse apple icon appears, and you are given a list of test options, press next and previous to scroll down to FIREWIRE, letter G. press select and your iPod will check it’s firewire port.) Mine checked out just fine, and I’ve run out of ideas. I am going on vacation on thursday, so I don’t have time to take my iPod to the apple store, but I was hopeing to find a way to do either a hard rest (erase everything from my iPod) or find another way to fix the problem. Please email me.

  8. Mhhh, it seems everything has flashable firmware nowadays. πŸ˜‰

Does it even have firmware per se? One would think it could just boot off the hard drive; it’s got a ton of RAM, and can thus spare the need for flash ROM.

  9. When i plug my ipod in it says new hardware found it might not work properly and when i try to click on my computer it freezes should i reinstal my ipod software or what?
