The Village

Saw M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village earlier tonight. It was very interesting, I’d recommend it. Bryce Dallas Howard was gorgeous.

  1. Bryce Howard really was fantastic; looks like she’s got a great career ahead of her. Good to see you’re recommending it, Matt. Most of the critics panned this flick, and I felt they’d really missed the mark on this one — another solid addition to Shyamalan’s filmography.

  2. Do you have to be a fan of his previous work to like it thought?

See.. for me I rate his films so far like this:

Sixth Sense – great, all round well done.
Unbreakable – Nice idea, good acting, kinda flat execution though.
Signs – failed on almost all levels. Some nice filmography in there tho…

So.. as you can see, it seems like he’s getting worse. In tone The Village seems to be very MNS, so what I’m wondering is… is the execution up to stuff (given my previous opinion of his other work) or is it just another movie by him?

  3. I thought “The Village” was a great film as well. I’m not sure why the critics panned it as it’s one of the few films out there that doesn’t follow some kind of predictable plot or format. Whether or not Shyamalan’s films completely succeed or not doesn’t always matter to me as I’m just glad to be able to appreciate the various things he’s trying to achieve.

  4. hmmm….looks like Sarah isn’t the only one with a thing for redheads! Ok, I heard that you can probably figure out the plot for the Village in the first half hour, but that there’s a very good plot twist at the end. I will have to ignore my ban on seeing “horror” movies in the theatre now, and go see it myself to give you a true opinion of it though. I have liked all of his other works thus far.

Sixth Sense: You know the scene when the kid is staring down that long hallway at the bathroom trying to work up the nerve to go potty? That was me as a child!! When the woman in the robe passed by the door, I screamed like a kid, and everyone in the theatre laughed at me. I got my revenge a few minutes later, though…..

Unbreakable: I thought that Willis was unusally one dimensional in it, and that Wright Penn was just DRAB (what happened to our bright Buttercup?). I LOVED Jackson, and his twisted obsessions – plus the comic aspect was nice for a geek like me. And again, the child was great.

Signs: Well, what made that movie for me, was the little girl. She just had me charmed from the first time that she told her dad that the water was contaminated. Gibson got to really show his range, and Phoenix finally got to play easygoing instead of some obsessed deviant. I especially liked the sense of humor and characterization in that movie. In fact, I could have almost done without the whole aliens plot, and just watched that family interact.

Well, Matt, you say I never read your site, and here I am spending my afternoon leaving comments…maybe I SHOULD check in more often instead of sneaking time here and there….Love C
