The WD Raptor drive got here yesterday, now all I need to finish up this new workstation is to pick a motherboard/CPU combo. (And get matching memory.) Can’t decide whether to go P4 or Athlon 64.

AMD64 + nForce4-Ultra motherboard…cheaper and faster solution…
Pentium 4’s are overpriced (and slow) small ovens…
Just my 0.02 euros… π
Wait if you can. If you’re buying now, Athlon 64 is the way to go.
Pentium M desktop motherboards should be updating soon. Otherwise, go AMD 64 (you’re running linux on it, right? π )
I’ll echo the choice for the Athlon π
same by me. atholons are dopest.
Yeah, I got a P4 – good over clock potential on it – if I stick a FORD radiator on the chip. Seriously though, keeps the house warm during these cold months. π
Oh, and the raptors are awesome. I got a 36 for my system drive – XP loads in less than a minutes. Very freakin awesome. Really sweet for games too – almost nobody beats me in loading π
I’d go with an Athlon too.
Jeff, do you sit by the toasty warm case, listening to the hum of the fans? ;o)
No actually I got the Sonatta case by Antec – can’t hear a damn thing outta the machine. Highly reccommend it – I can however hear my roommates dual athlon jet engines all the time. π
AMD64s with Cool ‘n’ Quiet + Asus’ Q-Fan motherboard feature means that the fan switches off sometimes, when you are just reading email and doing other non-intensive things.
How cool is that?
I have had a number of P4s at work, and I would go with AMD64 any day of the week (just did, in fact).
Hmm, I’ld go with P4 instead. For the reason Jeff Minard in post #6 mentioned :p
