IMHO, WordPress balances… it’s only the looks of the admin area that need a refresh 🙂
Indeed a good question. A good respond, a good writeup.
There has to be a compromise between making software ‘just work’ and minimising bloat. The best option is to include the features that everyone will use, and leave the ‘geek features’ to extensions/plugins/whatever your software calls them. Why? Because geeks will make the effort to install plugins, but ordinary users won’t.
