On Automattic's internal BuddyPress-powered company directory, we allow people to fill out a field saying how far their previous daily commute was. 509 people have filled that out so far, and they are saving 12,324 kilometers of travel every work day. Wow!

  1. It’s a strong ecologic benefit but it’s also a really great way to improve your mental health and mood. A lot of commutes are quite stressful and not a great way to start your day.

  2. Even more revealing may be the **time** saved from skipping our commutes.

30 miles in the Chicagoland area may mean 30 minutes, or 2 hours, depending on where you’re going. I do not miss my commute at all. 🙂

  3. Hey Matt, that’s a great insight although not surprising at all!

I rarely go out. I’ve saved thousands of hours, Philippine pesos (our currency), and kilometers by working from home (6 years now). I LOVE it so I’m spreading the good news about freelancing here in the Philippines! 😀

Hope you can visit our country (the Philippines) and work remotely here for a few weeks! Lots of popular and pristine beaches and mountains here.

Btw, thanks for your work in Automattic and WP. Been using WP for 4-6 years now.

  4. That’s incredible. Remote work is such a blessing. No shortage of people who hardly see their kids all week because they’re crawling through traffic for two or three hours every day.
