Do the Woo

For my first podcast of the year with the WordPress community, I joined the new Do the Woo podcast! It started with a little technical difficulty but ended up being a great conversation about WooCommerce, WordPress, and AI.

  1. Matt, thank you for the standard you continue to set in the global technology space. Automattic’s long-standing commitment to remote work, global hiring, and the open web has been genuinely inspiring to follow over the years.

On a more personal note, I have spent time exploring Automattic’s work and career paths because it is a company I would genuinely like to contribute to. One thing I have noticed, not just here but across much of the industry, is that while global inclusion has improved significantly, inclusion across career levels often lags behind. Most open roles tend to be senior-focused, which makes it difficult for early-career technologists who are aligned with the mission but still building experience to find a clear entry point.

It feels like there may be an opportunity to extend the same intentional thinking Automattic applies to global and distributed work into structured early-career pathways, whether through junior roles, apprenticeships, or contributor-to-hire programs connected to the WordPress and open-source ecosystem. This could help nurture long-term talent while strengthening the community that already believes in the work you are doing.

I appreciate the openness of your writing and the continued impact Automattic has on how technology companies can be built differently.

    1. I will admit that a weakness of the distribution model is that it’s very hard to replicate the mentoring and growth that comes from being in person every day for early-career people. We do hire very young and early-career folks, but typically after they have shown incredible agency and drive by contributing to our open source projects or shipping something interesting on their own.

On the WP.org side, we are doing a ton to engage with schools and provide training at WordCamps. https://learn.wordpress.org/course/wordpress-credits/
