Well the 512MB of DDR333 memory I ordered came in today, and so now I’m up to 768MB, which is quite nice. I feel like my applications can breath again. Even more importantly I upgraded the 900MHz processor that was in there on accident to a Athlon XP 1600, and it’s making a huge difference. My desktop is starting to feel like a real work environment again.
In other news, we’re going on 3 weeks since they took my laptop, and it’s really starting to get to me. I really could have used it to keep up with things these last few weeks, which incidentally have been my busiest in a long, long time. I had my next to last final today, and I was really ecstatic afterward. Knowing there is just one more (on Thursday) is a great feeling, and I can’t wait for summer to finally get started.
It’s going to be a summer of road trips, beaches, tans, jogging, and some very cool web stuff.
Lol, that’s ironic. I have about the same setup. Not long ago, I upgraded from a 700mhz Athlon to an Athlon XP 1600+ with 512mb DDR333 ram. It really did make a big difference. (Try Overclocking the 1600+ to about 1.6ghz if you want. Up the FSB a bit, but don’t change the multiplier or voltage settings.)
I might look into that. My cheapo motherboard that I got to replace the nice one that went out after 4 months actually looks like it may have some nice tweaking features.
Right now the biggest problem with the setup is the new memory is DDR333, but the older 256 stick is only 266, so everything is running at 266. Part of me wants the extra megabytes, but the other part says to use the latest thing possible.
Anyway, the next step is to get a nice processor (I’m thinking a 2400) with a 333 front side bus (which the motherboard supports), and after that dive into the world of serial ATA. I’ll post as things happen.
Yeah, I’ve got a decent motherboard, and would like a faster processor, but 9 months ago when I got my 1600+ for 55.00, it was a great deal for the speed and has proven good enough for what I do.
I also just noticed that you have “Mingus Ah Um” on your wishlist. I have to say that that is the only jazz cd I have that I can listen to from start to end over and over again and enjoy every one of the songs. I reccomend it. I also enjoy Doc Severinson’s “Swingin’ The Blues“.
