In Boston

Okay so I’m finally here in chilly Boston, living it up. I’m open to recommendations on places to eat, things to do, and people to see. (Besides the Boston WordPress Meetup this Saturday.)

  1. To See/Do:
    Museum of Science: http://www.mos.org/
    MIT: http://www.mit.edu/
    Freedom Trail: http://www.thefreedomtrail.org/
    Blue Man Group: http://www.blueman.com/
(Don’t know what you’re interested in specifically, but there’s lots to see and do)

    To Eat:
Fire and Ice as previously mentioned http://www.fire-ice.com/
Anywhere in the North End if you like Italian: http://www.northendboston.com/ (I can personally recommend Assagio’s for dinner (http://www.2nite.com/assaggio/home.htm) and Caffe Vittoria for drinks/desserts (http://www.vittoriacaffe.com/) )
    Jumbo Seafood in Chinatown
Pho Pasteur for Vietnamese (multiple locations: http://www.weseatyou.com/restaurants/704/infotomhazen/www/index2.htm)

Feel free to email me if you have any other questions or want to know about other types of stuff.

  2. The glass flowers at the Peabody museum are really cool.

Eat? Good burgers at R.F. O’Sullivans (Somerville), Tim’s (Boston South End), Miracle of Science (Cambridge Central) and Audobon Circle (Boston Kenmore). Yuppie pizza’s good at: Cambridge 1 (Cambridge), Emma’s (Cambridge – Kendall), and in the North End. Ethiopian fare at Attis the Red Sea (South End). Afghan at Helmand (Cambridge – Kendall). Indian at Punjabi Daba (Cambridge – Inman). And good cheap burritos at Anna’s Taqueria (all over the place).

  3. Eat: Legal Seafood.
See: Museum of Fine Art. Degas’ Dancer sculpture and Monet’s Water Lilies in one room–nearly knocked my legs out from under me.

Have fun! This BU alum envies you. 🙂

  4. Anywhere in the Fanueil Hall area, or Boylston, or Harvard Square (second recommendation for the Glass Flowers), The North End… OH! Mike’s Pastry for the bestest cannoli you’ll ever eat in your life!

Boston Metro area is the coolest place on Earth in my opinion

  5. I’ll second Jason’s list of 10 Things To Do… particularly the walking around the city part and the riding the Green Line part. And, if you want to combine riding the Green Line and eating, check out Green Line Menus.

  6. Well if it wasn’t for the fact that it’s Thanksgiving this week and my entire family will be staying with us all week/weekend – I would have loved to join in on the meetup on saturday. Hope this won’t be your last trip out here!

  7. I love travelling to Boston – I second the recommendation for Mike’s Pastries (yummy cannoli), Anthony’s Pier 4 is a wonderful fancy restaurant, and Chart House is probably my favourite (Macadamia nut encrusted mahi mahi with a peanut mango sauce was amazing!). The Cheesecake Factory is amazing (get the cheesecake to go, as the meal is amazing enough), as is Roka for Japanese, and finally, you can’t beat Fudruckers for a burger. As for what to do, I thoroughly enjoyed walking the south shore of the river from Harvard back to downtown – there’s a beautiful trail for the entire length. Let me know if you need more details, and have a great time!

  8. I just moved here a month ago, but I can make a few recommendations:

Pho Pasteur for pho (they deliver too)
The Wrap in Cleveland Circle, for wraps
Bamboo on Commonwealth Ave in Brighton, for Thai food
Vinny Testa’s on Beacon Street, for Italian
Bukowski bar (if you are a Bukowski fan)
    Tonic in Brighton, trendy bar/restaurant
Sunset Grill and Tap, Brighton Ave in Allston (lots of beers on tap, decent food)
The Hong Kong, Faneuil Hall (scorpion bowls)

    the MIT museum
the Museum of Science (see the electricity show)
    walking around Boston Common

  9. I say go to the Fanueil Hall are and just hang out. Something cool is bound to happen whether it’s musicians or street magicians or some other sort of performer.

  10. Also, if you haven’t already, you might look into the Boston-area jazz clubs. The jazz trio that played at my wedding reception has a regular Friday-night gig at the Long Wharf Marriott, but unfortunately they’re not scheduled for this week. 🙁 I’m sure there is plenty of good jazz, though, considering the abundance of music schools and other arts institutions in the city.

  11. Betty’s Wok and Noodle.

I wanted to like the Bukowski bar, but it was precisely because I AM a Bukowski fan that I didn’t like it. There are just trendy people in there smoking. Bukowski would have been sitting alone drinking by himself. Those people were there to be seen.

  12. Take a Duck tour! Take your camera with you and don’t forget to quack! Also, visit the Boston Commons, the Public Gardens (I guess it’s too cold for the swan boats this time of year) and the Old North Church. Good treats are to be had at Mike’s Pastry (North End) and Regina’s Pizza in the North End is to die for. Skip the one at Fanueil Hall, it’s nowhere near as good as the one in the North End.

As for bloggers to meet, the list is looooooong (I met with over 40 of them last time I was there), but I would definitely say that Sooz should be on the list. And Jennifer (ScriptyGoddess), but she has company in town for Thanksgiving.
