Sync Privacy

Sync took a different tack, and started off with “what if we didn’t want the data? What if even having that data was a failure state?” That led us to cryptography. Sync uses strong crypto to encode your data before it is uploaded. The secret phrase is the key to this encryption, and we never send that anywhere to keep your data secure. This really means that Mozilla can’t see your data, giving you full control. (Which is great, because we really don’t want it!)

  1. …which is great until you forget your password and Mozilla can’t help you recover your data.

…or if you want to give third parties permissioned access to your data.

But, if you’re comfortable with those tradeoffs, it’s great!

  2. since Sync is also open-source would it be possible to package it into a WordPress plugin so that my Sync server becomes part of my WordPress install? which is really the only place where my online data is mine

  3. Honestly if this will decrease my Personal Data Footprint online. If I read the Article right this would be awesome. I hope the project works as intended. I for can’t wait for for firefox 4 and sync 🙂
