In general I agree, but some companies camouflage this as fishing for free consulting, testing and/or feedback so you need to keep your eyes & ears open for telltale signs. It also helps to speak with people who have gone through the process at a given company in the past.

I wonder the same thing when the company I work for offers unpaid internships. We literally give them access to all our client’s data.
