Someone asked me the other day who my favorite rappers were, here they are in no particular order:

Pre-2000: Big Pun, Jay Z, Nas, Ludacris, Method Man.

Post-2000: Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, Childish Gambino, J Cole, Drake.

  1. The Sugarhill Gang and DJ Grandmaster Flash got me hooked for life in 1981.

Who are some of your favorite saxophonists? Quamon Fowler, AKA The “TeXas 10er,” is one of mine.

I’ve been studying remotely with him for more than three years now. This clip is from 2011 using Band in a Box: https://youtu.be/o_CLxQKo3hE

  2. Pre 1990… Run DMC, Fat Boys, Whodini, Eric B and Rakim, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Beastie Boys, and NWA
1990-2000 EPMD, Outkast, Tribe Called Quest, Biggie, Tupac, Digable Planets, Snoop, Nas, and early Eminem
2000 til now Most of it is trash especially Kanye and Jay Z (they are good at making pop and being marketing machines). Wiz Khalifa is good. Gucci Mane is the best rapper going. He tells stories beyond the typical bragging about cars and his style is innovative and traditional. He is the man, now that most other rappers are dead or have quit.

  3. Past: Rakim, Jay-Z, Nas, Big Pun, KRS ONE.
Present: J Cole………damn the hip-hop I know/like is slowly fading. I really just listen to the beats (which are getting wack too) cause lyrics are down.

  4. Are you no longer into the Pre-2000 crowd? Or does that just signify when you started enjoying them? Although Pre-2000 Jay-z has a special something that Post-200 Jay-Z cannot compete with.
