How ISO Works

Inspired by Om I’ve been getting back into my DSLR photography. I learned a lot about how ISO settings work from this delightful physics YouTube channel MinutePhysics.

  1. Hey, that’s a great video you found! Very few explain it that way. Thanks for sharing Matt. It all depends on what type of sensor your camera has as the video explained. Lika a digital camera with a CCD sensor (which is hard to find now) instead of a CMOS. Because it responds to light more like film, like I used back as a Chicago photojournalist, and many photographers that come over to digital from film confuse ISO with ASA from film. But it works differently as the video shows. I’m gonna bookmark this one!

  2. Perfect timing. I’ve been using my DSRL Canon t6i because I couldn’t be bothered to figet with the iphone camera when I want a normal photo. It’s like learning all over again. Just when I think I got it, and then I realize I don’t. The latter can be applied to life in general I guess. 🙂

  3. TL;DW: Digital ISO is more like a “volume knob” for the sensor signal and can result in overamplification, or noise. On the flip side, analog ISO is the film’s sensitivity rating to light, corresponding to the size of the silver halide crystals and increased “grain” with higher ISO speeds. Noise is bad, but grain can be nice.
