Netscape Crushes Competition

Anyone else notice similar trends on their site? Here’s my browser stats for this month to date:

  1. Netscape — 40.23% (Version 6 mostly.)
  2. Internet Explorer — 29.46% (70% version 6.)
  3. SharpReader — 4.99%
  4. Mozilla — 4.81% (Mostly 1.4, but with 1.5 not far behind.)
  5. Googlebot — 3.11%

  1. My stats are more like this: (sorry for the bad markup, but you don’t allow ul/li in comments 🙂

    1. MSIE — 26.6%
    2. Radio Userland (aggregator) — 13.7%
    3. Mozilla — 10.6% (mostly ver 1.4+)
    4. SharpReader — 7.0%
… And the remaining 43.9% is distributed amongst various obscure browsers, aggregators, and search engines.

It’s kind of disheartening that over half of my traffic is from aggregators and bots. :-/

  2. I almost forgot Netscape exists – my stats:

    1. Internet Explorer 6.x 77.1 %
    2. Internet Explorer 5.x 12.5 %
    3. Opera 7.x 3.5 %
    4. Netscape 7.x 2.8 %
    5. Mozilla 1.x 2.8 %
    6. Netscape 4.x 0.7 %
    7. Netscape 3.x 0.7 %

  3. I have a rather lame statistics package (Urchin 3.4), but it burped out the following:

32.8% – Internet Explorer (two thirds of which are IE6.0)
17.7% – Netscape (three quarters of which are NN6)
    10.2% – Non-Netscape Gecko
    07.3% – NetNewsWire
    06.4% – Python urllib
    04.0% – SharpReader
    03.8% – Googlebot

The rest are mostly bots (BlogShares ranks fairly high) and aggregators. Opera comes in with only 0.2%, which surprised me.

  4. Well with Opera it is trivial to change the user agent at will, and many people do from my impression. I wonder what Python urllib hits are from? Anyway most of my RSS is served from a subdomain with seperate stats so maybe tomorrow I’ll post the aggregator stats. It would be good for me as well as I’m looking for a good aggregator myself.

  5. Here’s some revised stats for my page, narrowed down to just August (my previous stats were year-to-date), and to just browsers (specifically, browsers with Javascript enabled):

    IE6: 56%
    NS/Moz: 25%
    IE5: 9%
    Safari: 5%
    Opera7: 2%
    Other: 3%
