So this is obviously the short-lived tv series, firefly, expanded. Some of that footage looked really familiar. Hard to tell if it’s picking up where the series left off or trying abridge that story into a two-hour movie. Still seems worth a look as I enjoyed the series.
It’s picking up where the series left off with a self-contained story. (Self-contained in the sense that the series is backstory rather than setup, so it shouldn’t be necessary to have seen the series to understand the movie.)
Kelson is right, the Serenity picks up 6 months after Firefly left off and is a self-contained story. There were 10 screenings in different cities for 5/5/5, and they all sold out within a matter of minutes. I’m glad, I just wish it guaranteed Joss coming back to television, ’cause I miss him. I’ve even gone back to buying X-men titles after about a decade just because I missed him so much. Matt, thanks for putting that up there, it’s nice to see it’s spreading, and it’s not just the Browncoats anymore. For now, “I aim to misbehave”…Love, C
I’ve noticed a lot of buzz for this one, which is really cool. I was fearing that it would tank at the box office, but if the excitement keeps building like this, it’s definitely going to be a success. (The budget was under $40 million, so if it breaks $100 million there’s a good chance that we’ll get a sequel.)
Firefly was a really great show, and it looks like Serenity keeps that same sensibility that made it so great.
Now, to keep from going nuts until September 30th…
it looks like they took all the best parts of the movie and put it in the trailer. i’m not interested. however, i saw hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy last night and that was pretty good 🙂
I can’t wait for this movie. I have the original series on DVD, and unlike other shows, they never get old to me. They are funny and smart and there is no sound in space which makes me happy 🙂
If you have QuickTime 7 (and right now that really means “if you’re running Tiger, aka Mac OS X 10.4”) there’s an insanely high resultion version of the trailer available – in 1280×544 pixels, using the new H.264 codec.
elissa, I wouldn’t say that – trust me. Knowing how Joss Whedon’s mind works, the best is far from in that trailer. 🙂
As a fan of the series, it’s nice seeing all the buzz going on about the trailer and the up-coming movie. Seriously, I’m hoping that FOX is seeing all this and kicking themselves repeatedly. Just the fact that all the advanced screening tickets were gone within hours of going on sale (and the “free” tickets to win were gone in a link of an eye) should say something about the fanbase.
I was at the Serenity focus group screening in Thousand Oaks and I can honestly say, the audience LOVED it. Went wild! I can’t wait till September and I already saw the movie. I was a fan in the sense that I kinda watched it with my friends, who were fans, but now I’m a convert.
elissa, Joss was given full control of almost every aspect of this movie. One of his pet peeves is trailers that have all the best parts of the movie in them, so I doubt it happened in this case. However, I warn you that he concentrates on dialogue and character development, so I can bet you that the movie will be a great deal wordier than Hitchhiker’s Guide ended up being. Ergo, you might not like it. That’s what had the fans worried: that too much story and not enough violence might turn off the average moviegoer.
What do you folks that pre-screened the movie think? Was there as much dialogue as the series?
For those of you that haven’t, I suggest renting the series on Netflix; I’d be interested in knowing what you thought of it.
It looks awesome, i want to see it so bad, it just looks incredible, i hadnt seen the series firefly but still it looks like it’ll be one of the best movies of the year. Can anyone tell me the song thats in the background of the trailer towards the end.
I think the song is “Club Foot” by Kasabian. I had to search all over the internet for it too before I came to an internet site which listed the group’s name. I hope this is the one you meant. I downloaded the song from iTunes and it matched the trailer which has been running on television. Good luck.

As many fans are saying, “Shiny!”
Definitely looks worth it.

I haven’t seen the series but the movie looks awesome. I’m gonna have to see it, whether it be in the theatre, DVD, or elsewhere.
The series is the most fantastic tv I’ve ever seen, not an exaggeration. The story picks up about 6 months to a year after Firefly finishes.

It will be worth it. This will be one of few real highlights this year.
