Six Apart Musings

September 4, 2004AsidesSix ApartMatt

Adam Kalsey writes Six Apart Musings. He won’t be porting his plugins to PHP. He has looked at WordPress, but if he moves to anything it’ll be more a full CMS. Adam is someone I’ll need to remember to mail when 1.3 is out. I like the Big Titles on his permalink pages. Hat tip: Phil.

Misconception

September 3, 2004AsidesMatt

Just to clear up a common misconception, I am in fact not the famous rapper Jay-Z. If you write a letter to him in my comments it won’t get there. Leaving your phone number, however, reflects an optimism about the web I miss.

Blosxom to WordPress

HOWTO migrate from Blosxom to WordPress. Uses the MT export format, which means things like hierarchical categories don’t transfer over. Hat tip: D’Ancy Norman.

Dynamic Plugins

September 1, 2004AsidesMatt

I think this post is overly negative but he brings up a good point about existing MT Perl plugins not working on dynamic pages (the #1 feature in 3.1). I can’t think of any possible way around this though, except rewriting the plugins. Perhaps the Smarty handler could pass unrecognized tags through a Perl shell script and grab the output.

The new Mozilla.org design looks great. If you reload they show different web pages in the screenshot. I wonder how you can get on that screenshot list? 🙂

Embittered Generals

August 31, 2004AsidesMatt

“We are “embittered generals”, and we are a threat for the W3C and the people working for the W3C. We are trashing years of W3C evangelism for our own glory. We are also accused of playing, unconsciously, for Microsoft.” Interesting read for anyone concerned about where the web is going next. I’ve been called many things before, but never “dangerous.”

New Mac Toys

August 31, 2004AsidesMatt

On Michael’s recommendation and a few other favorable reports I looped by the Apple store today and picked up an iCurve and Apple bluetooth wireless keyboard. So far I’m loving the iCurve and getting used to the keyboard. I’m doing an unusual amount of typing these days so I should be able to give the keyboard a good test. Contrary to popular reports, the keyboard does have more than one button.
