Recovering

That was quite possibly the best Thanksgiving ever. I ate, probably enough to feed a small village, but not too much to make me uncomfortable. The day started at my Grandmother’s house with aunts and uncles. Because of several people being out of town, I got to sit at the “adult” table this year, rather than be delegated to the kitchen. The food was wonderful, thanks in part to my uncle Colin who is a wonderful cook. There was green beans with fried onions on top, corn with chile peppers and paprika, great dressing, very sweet potatoes, and of course the turkey. I must have gone back three or four times, but I forgot to plan for desert so I wasn’t able to try any of it . . . then. Rene was supposed to join us but couldn’t get a ride down, but once I got a chance to I picked him up and the plan was to head back down and we would fix him something at my grandmother’s house.

Well I ended up held up at Rene’s, because it turns out they were about start their Thanksgiving meal, which I actually thought they were doing later in the evening. So we decided to stay for the food to get started and I enjoyed my second meal of the day, barely an hour later. It was really good, and interesting because the style of food was very different. So we ate, and then vegged for a little bit. Then it was back down to my Grandma’s house, because my dad was still there and I had the car. My dad was fine watching the Washington/Dallas game and I managed to find room for some deserts, a strawberry angel food thing and chocolate rum cake, of course with cold milk. After that we played frisbee for a bit in the park across the street.

The plan was then to head back up to Rene’s to watch some movies, but first we picked up Kyle. Then we headed to Joe’s and chilled there for a bit, probably at least a half hour. He had family in from Michigan and his house was really packed. They were just about to start dinner so he didn’t come along, and then we left and picked up Josh. We decided we wanted to see Swordfish, which Rene hadn’t seen before, so we headed back to Kyle’s to pick it up. While there I had some wonderful pumpkin pie, and then we headed up to Rene’s. The movie was good, and Rachel joined us toward the end.

After that I had my final meal of the night, a very traditional mashed potatoes, turkey, roll, and rice from their leftovers. The turkey was a little dry but I found that with a little mayonnaise it was quite good. Everyone was so tired we decided to end the night with the movie Antitrust, which I like and hadn’t seen in a while, despite owning it. I ended up home around 3:45, ready for rest.

Thanksgiving Eve

My Mom sent this to me, and even though technically it is now Thanksgiving, I haven’t gone to bed yet so it’s not yet.

’Twas the night of Thanksgiving, I just couldn’t sleep
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.

The leftovers beckoned, the dark meat and white
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation
The thought of a snack became infatuation.

So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, beans
and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, ’til all of a
sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
with a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.

I managed to yell as I soared past the trees . . .
Happy eating to all; pass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump, May your potatoes
and gravy have nary a lump.

May your yams be delicious, may your pies take the prize,
May your thanksgiving dinner stay off your thighs!

I hope everyone has a wonderful and happy thanksgiving.

Launcher X . . . Finally!

Well as of several minutes ago the official announcement has gone out for the release of Launcher X, the wildly anticipated competition for SilverScreen, the current king of launchers. I’m going to download and try this out tomorrow, because it’s to late now to give it any sort of good look. I mis-anticipated this a couple of days ago when I was sent a review copy of Launcher+, which has a similar name but is really a mediocre product. I’m not going to judge X before I try it out, but there has really been an almost Microsoft-like delay in the release of this project. When it was first screenshots were posted, it implied that the product would be released that month (it was about half a year ago if I remember correctly) and people were bouncing off the walls. Months later, there are more units with high resolution than ever before, but Pocket Sensei is going to release version 3 of Silverscreen any day now, and I’m thinking it’s going to rock the boat quite a bit. When Silverscreen was in the early 2.x releases it could have been cut off early; now it has gained quite a bit of well-deserved momentum and dislodging it will be much harder.

Server Update

Preparing for the new server has been taking up a lot of my time, telling clients about it and also making sure everything is tidy before we move stuff over. The plan, after everything is locked down, is to move all the accounts over (shouldn’t take more than about two hours) then point the DNS records on the old server to point to the new, and in the meanwhile the nameserver IP addresses will be rolling over to the new server, and we should be able to take down the old server by mid next week, after making double sure nothing got lost in the shuffle.

750 megabyte Zip Drive

Whoop dee doo. Maybe if this had come years ago before CD were as common as floppy drives. Maybe if it was priced significantly lower than CD technology is now. Maybe if everyone still used Zip disks and this was completely backward compatible. Maybe then I would consider this worth it. It’s strange to see a one-hit-wonder company struggling for relevancy like this.

Update: I forgot to say what made me really mad about this: I got seven emails from Iomega to the same address telling me this “wonderful new product.”

Satisfaction

I have made quite the discovery. I’ve been seeing Kristine post about naps quite a bit, so when I found myself with some free time earlier today I decided to try it.

Oh. My. Gosh.

The rest of the day I was refreshed and on the ball, it was like a whole other world. The air was fresher; the sky was bluer; the chocolate was sweeter. I realized that there has been a huge gap in my life of about fourteen or fifteen years where I took no naps, maybe even longer since I seem to remember messing around during naptime in kindergarten. This has got to change—no longer will I sleep only in a large block (actually usually a small block) at nighttime. If you haven’t tried this nap thing lately, you really should. Anyone else recently discover the joy of naps?

More on Monospaced Fonts

Well I’ve found a few more I plan to check out, and I’m going to give each at least a day’s worth of heavy coding, then narrow it down progressively until I finally decide on one. The non-free fonts that don’t look terribly promising I’m going to try and test drive online, but MyFonts anti-aliases things pretty heavily and indiscriminately, which makes it hard to tell how fonts work at smaller sizes. The new entrants in the contest are:

Several of these font suggestions come via Aaron Swartz’s favorite fonts list. Personally I’d like to see more lists like this, perhaps in a semantically meaningful way that could be indexed and presented in different ways. Any format come to mind? I know I’ve read a couple of similar lists before, so I’ll try and dig up some more links.

Block Those Ads

I’ve seen some pretty good host files in the past, but this one looks like the most thorough. Not sure where the name comes from though. “. . . so quite simply this file tells your computer to try to access itself whenever a banner advert is requested from a server that is in its ‘black’ list, so instead of contacting the advert server your computer simply tries to request itself and as your machine doesn’t contain any adverts (if you are not running a web server on it) nothing will be shown.”

I Won!

I’m cleaning up my room, as I always do when the weather starts to get cold, and going through a drawer I found the most remarkable piece of paper. Apparently I had made a bet with my friend Lucas that George W. Bush was going to run for President. For posterity, here’s the entire text of the letter:

On 11-20-98 [we weren’t Y2K compatible] in World Geography with Mista [sic] Molloy, Lucas and Matthew made a $2 bet that George Bush Jr. will run for president.

[signature] Matthew Mullenweg | [signature] Lucas Spath

Matthew says he will
Lucas says he won’t

The person who is right gets the two dollars ($2)

We must have been quite bored to make the language that specific, but I guess next time I see Lucas I should hit him up for the money. I need to make more bets . . .
