Security advice from Bruce Schnier:
“If possible, don’t use Microsoft Windows.” There are some other good tips there too, like microwaving CD-Rs and deleting cmd.exe.

New Business Cards

September 10, 2003PersonalGeneralMatt

Nothing brightens a long day (or night) like fun new business cards. If you’re in to this sort of thing, here’s mine:

The front of my new business card. The back of my new business card

If you’d like one (or two, one to pass on) let me know. In other news I heard a rumor that there may be navigation at the top of the page sometime soon. We shall see.

Research proves what open source folks have been saying all along: “An analysis of the 5.7 million lines of Linux source code shows that it contains fewer bugs per thousand lines of code than commercial counterparts.”

A Nine

September 16, 2004GoogleMatt

Amazon’s search engine A9 is looking really good. I’m on a 9600 connection through my cell phone and Google just wouldn’t come up when I needed to check something. I remembered a9.com and how you could just type the search in after the domain. It was faster than Google and I found what I was looking for.

Nathan Myhrvold, who pops up on this blog frequently, finds we need clean energy yesterday (and no natural gas) to avoid being cooked.

Sometimes, you just want 2 chocolate chip cookies. This happens to me all of the time. I want a super indulgent, rich and buttery chocolate chip cookie, but don’t want to make the whole 36 of them which I’d inevitably inhale over about the same amount of hours.

Ever wondered a good recipe to make just 2 chocolate chip cookies? Now you know.

But one day, the company could “open source” the code that underpins the OS—giving it away for free. So says Mark Russinovich, one of the company’s top engineers.

“It’s definitely possible,” Russinovich says. “It’s a new Microsoft.”

From Wired’s An Open Source Windows Is ‘Definitely Possible’. In 2007 I predicted Windows will be Open Source by 2017, we’ll see if I end up being right on that one.

It seems like Feedster has redesigned and looks a lot better. Some silly validation errors, but I’m sure they’ll get to that soon enough.

Party Pics

February 16, 2005Books, EventsMatt

Some pictures from the party last night, the first I’ve seen so far. People didn’t clear out until almost 3 AM, I’m still recovering. I also ended up with an extra Powerbook, which I’m sure someone will claim. 🙂 I heard the Flickr tag will be upgradeparty. Technorati tag: upgradeparty.
