Content vs. Context, on the issue of the multitude of CMSes. I just picked up two books on a related issue I’m looking forward to reading: The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz and The High Price of Materialism by Tim Kasser.

Matt 2.2
We’re very proud to announce the final release of Matt 2.2, a full year in the making since the last major release. This version includes dozens of enhancements ranging from DSLR support to the new facial hair module (which we could never quite get to work in previous revs). The knowledge base has been expanded, though it’s still a bit light on the experience benchmark. We’ve also fixed that bug that was around since about 1.7 where it thought the knowledge base was already full. Now it knows more, but knows it knows less. Short-term RAM is still a little flakey. Email processing is also still slow, but the “piano” and “reading” plugins have come a long way. This version also runs without a support contract from a major corporation. Most people surveyed agreed this was a solid upgrade, but we know there’s a lot of work left to do still. We hope to continue listening to feedback and keep up the regular release schedule.

German WordPress Book
This German WordPress book is, as far as I know, the first to be published exclusively about WP. Here’s to many more. They sent me an email and hopefully I’ll get a copy in the mail soon.

Back Online
I called my sister last night to tell her about a present I found for her in the market and she interrupted me to say she saw my name show up in Google News a few times and started reading some of the articles. Before the phone card ran out she read me some headlines and my stomach sank. This is my first vacation and I almost didn’t even bring my laptop. (Luckily I talked myself into bringing it to do pictures.) I haven’t been on the internet since Monday and I obviously have a lot to catch up on. It was almost midnight when I found out and there was no access anywhere, so I woke up at 4:30 AM this morning to catch the first water bus to the airport and found some overpriced wifi, and here I am.
I have close to a thousand emails and countless blog posts and comments to go through, but I’ll try to synthesize everything and respond ASAP, I think it’s important because some people seem to be spinning things quite maliciously. If you have a specific question please send me an email and I’ll do my best to respond personally or on the blog, even if you’ve already decided I’m the scum of the earth.
WysiWyg Plugin
So I’ve made a first pass at a WYSIWYG plugin using widgEditor. For some reason it doesn’t work on the simple post screen, just the advanced one. It’s in the repository if anyone has any suggestions. Todo: prettier/smaller buttons, strip/add paragraph tags, activate for more than just the main content area.
Party Pics
Some pictures from the party last night, the first I’ve seen so far. People didn’t clear out until almost 3 AM, I’m still recovering. I also ended up with an extra Powerbook, which I’m sure someone will claim. 🙂 I heard the Flickr tag will be upgradeparty. Technorati tag: upgradeparty.
WordPress PIM
A four part series on using WordPress as a Personal Information Manager. “I’ve spent the last couple of weeks setting up a personal database of favourite poems, book quotes, short author bios and related links. I had previously shoehorned my poetry collection into a Keynote file, but then wanted something more flexible, customizable and expandable: a database.” Interesting use of custom fields.
Pfister on 1.5
I would recommend reading Jenna Pfister’s great review of 1.5. I’ve been working with the 1.5 codebase so long now that I’ve actually forgotten some of the new features—I may use this article when writing the release announcement. Hat tip: My WordPress dashboard via Feedster.
Ta-da Ta-Don’t
My Ta-da List down again, and I’m faced with the fact that it’s a Monday and everything I need to do is on that list. I’m reminded why I distrust hosted services. I don’t want to be upsold to Basecamp, I just want a simple online service to manage my tasks.
Synchronize Bookmarks
I’ve rediscovered the Firefox Bookmark Synchronizer and it really rocks. I’ve got it to save on close and reload on open so all of the computers I regularly browse on will always have the latest and greatest and greatest bookmarks. I can use bookmarks for cross-computer notes and to-read lists now, too. Another killer app for Firefox. Update: Link updated, should work now.
Todo Lists
I was really impressed with Ta-da list, the latest from 37signals, enough even to put all my todos into it. I started writing this post because I couldn’t get to my todos because of a problem with their server, and I was going to say how hosting your own is sometimes best, but they seemed to have fixed the problem already. Whew, now that I know what I need to do again, I better get to it.
Merlin Mann
I met Merlin Mann last night at the Creative Commons party last night and even saw the hipster PDA in action. Pretty neat stuff, I may even make the 43 Folders meetup on Tuesday Wednesday, but first I should probably finish up GTD. (I’ve never gotten to Part Three, which may speak for itself.)
Book Hooks
Opening Hooks, a collection of literary beginnings. Cool idea. Have a look.
Bushlies.com
Without discussing the actual politics of the site (please) Bushlies.com is the first use of WordPress to promote a bestselling book I’ve seen. Judging by the comment counts it gets some good traffic.
Subversion Book
Version Control with Subversion, a free online book.
Cool Powerbook Cases
My bud Kelly just pointed me to these cool Powerbook bags. This looks like it could work. I want something very slim and form-fitting for my 12″ to basically protect it from scratches. Most of the time it’ll probably be inside my messenger bag, but I need to protect it from scratches inside of that. Any suggestions?
Leaves Rustling Again
Noel’s Leaves Rustle is back and looking better than ever. It’s just a day old and there’s already engaging content. One for the bookmarks (again). Oh, and using WordPress. 🙂
Client does not support authentication protocol
MySQL Manual – Client does not support authentication protocol, how to get new MySQL (> 4.1) to work with old clients (like PHP4 installed on my Powerbook).
Missing Inch
My 12″ Powerbook is just under 11″ wide. I demand a refund.
