WordPress-ive

J. Michael thinks WordPress is WordPress-ive. “And their website’s Installing and Upgrading WordPress wikis are the sort of Help pages most every open source app I’ve ever used was lacking. They’re simply a pleasure to use. […] WordPress fills a specific need I’ve had since my very first website back in the mid-late nineties, and I simply can’t believe it’s free.”

Blog Census

Is anyone doing anything to replace or update the Blog Census? It still doesn’t count WordPress blogs, two years later, and that there are only 3 Textpattern blogs. Right now at Ping-O-Matic we have a database of over 5.6 million blogs, if anyone has a smart crawler I could throw at that list it’d be great to get a more realistic view of the State of the Blogosphere.

WordPress Translations

Since 1.5 has been out for a few months now it occured to me to check how the translation efforts have been going. We had a ton of requests from our localization community that we addressed in the bugfix releases for 1.5 and we use the gettext translation framework, which (I’m told) makes localization a pleasure. Of course the place to go is the Codex, which has a page detailing over 35 language packs as well as about a dozen foreign-language sites from Hebrew to Turkish to Japanese dedicated entirely to that country’s WordPress community. Also my copy of the German WordPress book came in the mail today and judging from the screenshots it looks pretty comprehensive.

Red Herring Alert

I just got a Google alert for a Red Herring article on Six Apart set to publish in a few days. They mention us here: “Critics of Six Apart say that WordPress, a blog publishing platform developed by a grassroots team, is more robust than Movable Type. WordPress is also open source and free. But things are different in Six Apart’s cash-crop enterprise space, where support and security are at the top of the list. Half of Movable Type servers sit behind a firewall, says Mr. Berkowitz.”

miniBB

I’ve spent all night hacking miniBB to have some semblance of standards compliance. I like it a lot because it’s simple and easy to get around, but the coding style (or lack thereof) in the source is really painful. In addition to no formatting of the PHP, the HTML suggests a lack of a basic understanding of markup languages, with enough nested tables to curl your toes. But guess what, it validates. On that note I would like to announce that the WordPress Support Forums are now up and humming along nicely.

NT Stands for…

Just saw this interesting snippet:

During a trip to Microsoft’s Redmond campus this week, I had the opportunity to meet with Mark Lucovsky, one of the original architects of Windows NT. We had a long discussion about NT’s development and evolution; one of the more fascinating tidbits he revealed was that NT doesn’t, in fact, stand for New Technology, as documented in books such as “Showstoppers” and “Inside Windows NT” (Microsoft Press, 1992). Instead, the name comes from the earliest days of the product’s development, when Microsoft designed NT to use the Intel i860, a RISC processor. In those days, Intel’s chip was behind schedule, so Microsoft had to use an i860 emulator called the N10. NT was so named because it worked on the “N-Ten.”

Five Thousand!

Well I am proud to announce that the photolog has reached a great milestone: over 5,000 publicly viewable photos are now online. The champagne is flowing freely at the photomatt.net world headquarters. If you haven’t been in a while, I just put up two portrait series, some fun stuff, and some narratives. I’m looking forward to the H-Town Blog get-together tonight.
