A lunch by the poolside, WordPress Dubai meetup, and dinner at the Buddha Bar.
Sunny
It seems for blogs.sun.com WordPress was considered at one point, but they decided to go with the Java product Roller instead. Too bad, because their feeds seem strange, they have terrible URIs, and I have no idea what’s the permalink for a page. Anyway.
Check out this amazing story of a black macaque monkey that picks up a photographer’s camera and takes self-portraits.
Staticize Plugin
Staticize Plugin for WordPress. Drop in your plugins directory, create a directory for it to put stuff, and activate. Instant on-demand caching. I’m going to try this out here as soon as I finish the server move. (The photolog may be broken for a few hours.)
Harris County Jury
Via Om, I wanted to share this poem Away by James Whitcomb Riley:
I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead. He is just away.
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you—oh you, who the wildest yearn
For an old-time step, and the glad return,
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here.
Think of him still as the same. I say,
He is not dead—he is just away.
Exploring Cappadocia
Balloons, learning about Turkish rug-making and seeing hundreds of beautiful rugs, exploring and making ceramics, dinner with the Bisnows, who happened to be staying at the same hotel.
LinkRanks
It looks like LinkRanks have been owned, dominated by something call “deai.com.”
Tahoe Pics
A day in Tahoe, everything from snow on the beach to blue steel to flying dirt and gorgeous rocks and water. Oh, and of course a little shameless self-promotion.
New York to Dubai
Stopover in New York, seeing Julie; A380 Emirates flight to Dubai.
We are here because the editor of this magazine asked me, “Can you tell me what code is?”
Paul Ford’s amazing What is Code? for Bloomberg. I only spotted one mistake, of course from the Taupe Blazer guy: you’re never at the limits of WordPress.
How Tesla Will Change The World from the great Wait But Why.
Fast Company has a great and in-depth look at the United States Digital Service (and similar programs across the government) that is really interesting. They have a number of people involved that I really respect, and I can’t wait to see the results of it not just in the remainder of Obama’s term, but the coming decade. It’s shocking how much is spent on IT at not just the federal level, but the waste at the state and municipal level is even more shocking in many ways because there is so much duplication across the country (and the world). I’ll be blogging more about this theme this week.
Nifty Corners
A different way to do rounded corners, for that chic Blogger look. Hat tip: Phil.
Celebrating 10 Years
We did an official ten year post and video.
100k and Counting
WordPress 100,000 Party, and here’s the Evite. This is going to be a lot of fun. 🙂
Bay Area
Only in the Bay area: Last night I was down at the Mountain View In-n-Out Burger enjoying a double and chocolate shake when I ran into Paul Martino, CTO of Tribe, and his lovely wife. We were both on the “Open Source Infrastructure” panel just last week. Tribe is doing some neat things with open data and standards, it’s time to check them out again.
Meeting Ben
While in Florence I had the pleasure of meeting Ben Hammersley who took us to have real Tuscan food, which apparently involves parts of a cow you wouldn’t normally expect to eat. We chatted about a whole range of topics and I learned quite a bit about everything from solo polar expeditions to DNA hacking.
Music Photo
I just put up this old photo of some Charlie Parker music.
Digg Effect Deconstruction
The Digg Effect: A Deconstruction, with a WordPress blog of course.
